Eversolo DMP-A8 Streamer

Eversolo, a relatively new name in the streaming world, is backed by Zidoo Technology, a respected company known for its high-quality media players. The DMP-A8, Eversolo's latest flagship streamer, follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, the DMP-A6, but with notable upgrades that bring it to a whole new level.

Build and Design

The DMP-A8 has an impressive build quality, offering excellent fit and finish for its price point. Its design follows the A6's styling but with larger dimensions, measuring 388x248x90mm and weighing 7kg. The hybrid power supply design, combining a switched-mode power supply for the digital sections and a linear power supply for the audio circuits, ensures top-tier audio performance.

Technical Features

Eversolo has opted for the high-end AK4499EX and AK4191EQ DAC chips from Asahi Kasei in the DMP-A8, departing from the ESS ES9038Q2M chip used in the A6. The preamp section provides up to 10dB of gain and features a discrete resistor network for volume control, offering superior channel balance and transparency. Additionally, the rear panel offers a variety of inputs and outputs, including RCA and XLR analog inputs, coaxial, optical, USB-B, HDMI ARC/eARC, Bluetooth, and multiple digital outputs, ensuring extensive connectivity options.

The unit supports up to 768kHz PCM and DSD512, alongside MQA decoding, making it highly versatile when it comes to file compatibility. Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet ensure stable and reliable network connectivity.

User Experience

Setting up the DMP-A8 is effortless, whether you're streaming from popular services like TIDAL, Qobuz, or Deezer, or using your music library via Roon or DLNA. You can also connect an external SSD (up to 4TB) or use a thumb drive for local storage. The user interface is intuitive, with a bright and responsive 6-inch touchscreen and a well-designed app. The device offers a rich array of options, from VU meters and spectrum displays to a 10-band parametric equalizer and DSP functions for room correction.

The DSP module offers features like gain control, channel delay, and high- and low-pass filters, though it's important to note that the module only operates at a 48kHz sampling rate and cannot process PCM streams above 192kHz or DSD streams.

Performance

In use, the DMP-A8 impresses with its sonic performance. Its bass is deep and powerful, lending authority to dynamic tracks, while the midrange and treble are smooth and refined. The DMP-A8 excelled in creating a deep soundstage with crisp and detailed rhythms from the double bass and cymbals. However, the width of the soundstage could have been more expansive. The streamer revealed good resolution and separation between instruments, ensuring clear vocals amidst a busy mix.

The DMP-A8 also impressed when using Bluetooth, providing a clean, high-quality sound without noticeable latency.

Comparisons to the DMP-A6

The DMP-A8's improvements over the DMP-A6 are clear, particularly in its richer, weightier bass, smoother midrange, and higher resolution. It offers a more fluid, dynamic sound, with greater refinement compared to the A6, which has a brighter, lighter presentation. The A8 excels in separation and clarity, especially when paired with an external DAC, though it requires an I2S output for optimal sound quality with an external DAC.

Preamp Capabilities

The DMP-A8 also serves as an excellent preamp. When connected directly to a power amplifier, it provides a lighter but equally detailed presentation compared to a dedicated preamp like the EAR 912, making it a versatile option for various system configurations.

Conclusion

The Eversolo DMP-A8 is a standout streamer that delivers superb sound quality, an extensive feature set, and an intuitive user experience—all at an affordable price. Its remarkable preamp performance and high level of customization make it a top contender in its class. Whether you are a first-time streamer or looking to upgrade from an existing model, the DMP-A8 is a worthy investment for any audiophile seeking refined and musical performance.
